Canopy beds were created back in the 1500′s in order to protect the sleeping from insects. Although many of the first canopy beds were very basic and usually were used in the homes of the poor, soon the canopy bed made it’s way into the homes of the upper class.

By the 1600′s, canopy beds were no longer used in the same capacity. During this time, heavy decorative curtains were added to provide privacy and warmth.

While the original canopy beds were wooden, canopy beds are now available in an assortment of materials. Canopy beds are also gender friendly. Long gone are the days classified canopy beds as feminine.
