The kitchen is often considered to be the “heart” of one’s home. This is the environment in which the family can come together to relax and enjoy one another. The Kitchen lighting will affect the ambiance of the kitchen. Contemporary kitchen lighting can be quite different from traditional lighting; however, both styles have their merits. Modern kitchen lighting tends to lend a feeling of uniqueness and artistry to its environment. Traditional kitchen lighting aims to set a mood of homeliness and comfort. The term “traditional kitchen lighting” can actually encompass a wide variety of different styles. These styles tend to be reminiscent of older styles from the 1950’s to the 1990’s, according to the individual homeowner’s particular taste. They generally include ceiling fans with light attachments, fluorescent lighting, or a single, individual lighting fixture. The elements of the lighting fixture too will determine whether or not the item is traditional. For example, more traditional lighting fixtures tend to have panes of dark colored glass, single bulbs, and simple clean lines in their design. Finishes for traditional lighting generally contain lacquer, wood veneer, solid wood, or natural wood tiling.
Modern Kitchen lighting is primarily concerned with, as aforementioned, lending an element of uniqueness and individuality to an environment. Rather than being centrally located on the ceiling of a room, contemporary lighting may be placed at different points in the kitchen. It may be placed underneath the cabinetry of a kitchen to highlight a back splash or recessed lighting may be used to illuminate different areas of the room, such as an island or a dining room table. Modern lighting is generally characterized by clean, simple; however, it may also contain elements of elaborate scrollwork. Contemporary kitchen lighting fixtures may be constructed from iron, bronze, or brass. Generally, modern kitchen lighting does not have colored class in its elements. Because it is used primarily to enhance the brightness of a room, kitchen fixtures that have glass elements tend to be luminescent in their shades’ coverings. The homeowner’s personal tastes and the overall décor of the room will determine the appropriate type of lighting fixtures for a kitchen.
