Kids Playroom Decorating Ideas and Inspiration

February 25, 2012 By: Category: Bedroom Decor, Decorating Ideas

colorful girls playroomCreating a playroom for your child can be as simple as combining color, small furniture and handmade art. A playroom is an escape for children when the weather or other factors may prevent them from going outside. Your child’s playroom is the place to store their toys, books and other recreational items.
Kids Playroom Storage:
If your child is like my son, over the years, they have collected a number of toys and gadgets. Storing these items may become a task as your child ages and continues to get more and more toys. Some great storage items for children’s playrooms are cubby holes. If you are storing clothing and the room has a closet, consider placing a chest or tote in the closet to store more items without taking up space or creating an eye sore in the room. If there is the need to hand items such as coats, robes or sweaters, consider colorful wall hooks at a level accessible by your little ones.

5 Tips to Modernize Your Bedroom

February 22, 2012 By: Category: Bathroom Decor, Decorating Ideas

Injecting a fresh, modern look into your outdated bedroom begins with decluttering. Many homeowners create dumping grounds in their master bedrooms through a perpetual piling of personal articles, clothing, books, magazines and other assorted items. Removing unwanted furnishings and clearing away stacks of personal belongings provides more usable floor space as well as a clean room. Toss the rubbish, store the items you wish to keep, and donate extra furniture pieces to your favorite charity. Clearing the clutter provides a tidy bedroom to embark upon your desired updates.

Next, gather the necessary remodeling tools and decorating supplies and let the updates begin. You can transform your archaic sleeping quarters into a refreshingly modern haven of peace and tranquility at your own pace. Here are some tips to get your bedroom moving in a modern direction.

Walls and Windows
Applying a fresh coat of paint to the walls and ceiling can do wonders for an antiquated bedroom. Selecting a neutral paint color, such as creamy white, soft beige or light gray provides a modern update that enhances almost any color scheme. Keep window treatments simple — Roman shades, wooden blinds or natural woven shades are a perfect modern complement.

Furniture
Give older furniture a face-lift with a coat of fresh paint and new hardware. Black and white paint colors provide an instant update to worn and outdated furniture. Replace old drawer pulls, knobs and hinges with brushed or polished nickel hardware.

Floors
Refurbish wooden floors to enhance their natural beauty and shine. Substitute out-of-date carpet with a stylish replacement in a neutral color. Area rugs can add color, texture and warmth to tile, laminate or wooden floors.

Accessories
Hang an abstract, colorful piece of framed art over your bed to create an instant, modern focal point. A new bedding ensemble, an assortment of toss pillows and potted greenery, supply bursts of new energy to a tired bedroom. Add an over-size mirror to a bare wall to create a sparkling update.

Lighting
Sleek metal table lamps topped with white circular lampshades provide task lighting for reading, while enhancing the modern decor. Contemporary floor lamps can brightly illuminate a dark corner. Suspend a fun, decorative light fixture above your bed to add a modern, whimsical touch.
Whether you decide to tackle your bedroom renovations alone or hire a professional for assistance is a personal preference. Consider your room makeover budget and the time frame you have targeted for completion of your remodeling. Modernizing a bedroom can increase the value of your home while providing years of personal enjoyment.

Creating A Vintage Style Living Room

February 20, 2012 By: Category: Living Room Decor

The best part of creating a vintage style living room is the options of style that you have. You can go for a general vintage style with some vintage furniture surrounded by a generally chic atmosphere, or you can choose from your favourite era dedicating the room to nostalgic décor and accessories that are typical for that period.
modern vintage living roomFor the general vintage look, consider buying old furniture from a flea market and repainting it white or pastel blue. Make sure that it’s a thin layer of paint, so you can still see the natural pattern of the wood underneath the paint. This gives it a whitewashed look, which is very vintage. Being daring with colours and patterns is very popular for creating a vintage look, so consider patterned curtains and patterned wallpaper in combination with bright accessories such as orange cushions. Having pictures of no longer used logos of famous brands such as Pepsi or Pam Air, or items with these logos on show off your awareness of the new trends but you’re preference for the vintage look.
Be sure that everything in your vintage look matches with each other, but isn’t old fashioned. There’s a large difference between vintage and old-fashioned, and the inexperienced vintage fan may make the mistake of confusing the two. Vintage is more about celebrating the past by combining it with the new. For your general vintage look, feel free to have a luxurious leather sofa, but add some colour to it like light blue or yellow to give it more of a vintage feel. The same goes for contemporary lamps and shades. They, too, can be used in a vintage living room with a bit of colour.
If you’ve chosen a specific era, then you will have hours of fun tracking down that perfect piece for your vintage style. If you like a quick design to your room, and are not keen on collecting, then you’d be better off with a general vintage look. Era specific vintage enthusiasts are all about finding that lost treasure from the right period that they can include in their collection.
For a 50s style living room think Pink Cadillac sofas, a jukebox, neon lights of old diners and framing old movie pictures of some of the classics like Casablanca. Any Elvis memorabilia has a home in a 50s style room, just like any Beatles memorabilia has one in a 60s style living room.
For the 60s, think more white accentuated with patterns or small splashes of colours. Furniture is no longer white washed, but pure white and plastic dominates the room in a minimalistic style décor. Long venetian blinds fit this era better than curtains, along with futuristic styled lamps and a funky globe chair.
Personally, I find the 70s very difficult to represent fully, as there are many negative associations with this style. Not to say that this is a bad style to mimic. It simply has a strong emphasis on eccentric patterns on curtains, carpet, wallpaper and clothes with tones of greens and browns being predominately used. It took a long time for printed wallpapers to get rid of their old-fashioned stigma, and I believe, this may be from overusing them in the 70s.
If you’re a 80s child, and love 80s vintage, then clutter and brands are your friend. Think neon colours, roller blinds, and brands all over. Funky phones in the shape of burgers or Mickey Mouse, old game consoles of Nintendo, Sega or Atari lying near the TV, posters (not framed this time) of classic 80s cult hits like ‘Back To The Future’, and of course at least one Rubix Cube needs to be a part of your décor. Fashion wise, the 80s are often dismissed as one of the dark periods, but home décor wise the 80s is a very fun period to experiment with, as there are many different paths you can follow depending on your taste.
The main advantage of vintage is that it’s up to you. If you’re a collector then vintage will work for you. If you like to keep things minimalistic, but you like colour and rustic styles then vintage can work for you, too.

When I hear “wall mural” I think of vintage wall murals. These murals are not the best options if you desire a modern look. However, there are options for those that desire a contemporary wall mural design.

Wall Decals
Wall decals have become very popular over the last view years. They are perfect for adding a personal touch to a nursery, bedroom or any other room in your home. Wall decals can feature wording or simply images. Wall decals are another option to adding style and flair to your home and still maintain a bit of flexibility.

Ideas for Decorating a Masculine Master Bedroom

February 17, 2012 By: Category: Bedroom Decor

Creating a master bedroom for a bachelor’s pad is a little different. If a man lives alone, it is unlikely that he would be thrilled to wake up to floral sheets and pink or orange wall art. Adding a touch of “masculine” details using home accents can transform any bedroom into a “man cave” easily.

When selecting a comforter or duvet set for a masculine bedroom, consider color block, chevron, stripes or a nice solid color. Using a pattern that appears “girly” will totally take over the bedroom. Stay away from floral prints, damask and “girly” colors.
Masculine abstract wall artMasculine Wall Art
When decorating in modern or contemporary décor, most wall art is abstract. This is definitely an advantage when decorating for a male’s bedroom. Metal wall art is also a great option.
Color Schemes
Some ideal color schemes for a masculine master bedroom are neutral colors, such as black, white and gray along with other masculine colors such as blue, green and brown. These darker colors are great for decorating with masculinity.
